Thing 1 and Thing 2

This was our easiest rescue ever, by a wide margin.

We got word that there were two friendly cats, brothers, about six months old, out by a furniture store that had recently closed. A friend of ours would go by on a daily basis and feed them and reported that they came right up, allowed pets, etc.

As soon as we got things arranged and secured them a spot on the adoption van, Jennifer and I headed out to see if we could collect them.

We greeted them with a can of food and they came running. Set the food and the carrier up on the loading dock of the store, then, after they had a few bites, transferred the food into the carrier. Both cats hopped right in and continued eating. We closed the lid and that was that.

They settled right into our living room, which we closed off and gave to them, exclusively. All was well for a few days, and we formally named them – instead of Thing 1 and Thing 2, they became Sebastian (Bash) and Phineaus (Finn).

Bash was much more friendly than his brother, who would let you pet him but was a bit on the skittish side.

Day 4, I went to check on them and found blood all over the living room. Bash was sitting in the middle of the floor with blood around his mouth and drool all over his forepaws.

We rushed him to the vet and they kept him for a couple days. No definitive diagnosis, but a couple days of antibiotics and fluids and he bounced back, returning to us as gregarious as ever.

In the meantime, we collected a five week old female kitten, Pearl, into our care. She was underweight with a serious upper respiratory infection. We placed her in the room with Bash and Finn and the brothers took to her right away.

Pearl, being a tortie, had some attitude, and although younger and smaller, quickly became the alpha of the impromptu pack. Bash and Finn were her adoring subjects and they took good care of her while they remained together.

The group stayed together for nearly a week, and then, the boys went in for their shots, and a day later, we got the call that the van had space for them. We dropped them off at the vet and they left to find their Forever People on December the second, 2025. I hope they get adopted together and we mentioned to everybody involved that they were a bonded pair. Best of luck, Finn and Bash!
